’’’Canterra’’’ is a frequently contested world between the Federation and the Gorn Hegemony.

The Canterra System

The Canterra Star System

The Canterra System was mapped in 2290 by the USS Coral Reef, a deep-space explorer. The system was uninhabited and generally unvisited by any Federation personnel until 2367 when assembly began of Starbase 99 as the Canterra system had become a strategic point along the Gorn border. At this time the lengthy negotiations were going well but after they faltered several times Starfleet decided to err on the side of caution and begin construction.

Technically a binary star system, the small Brown Dwarf Canterra Beta orbits the much larger O-type Cantearra Alpha but due to its small size many scientists argue that Canterra Beta should be reclassified as a Class-T Large ultra-giant but to date, no decision has been made by the Federation Science Council. The system itself has four planetary bodies as defined below:

Canterra I 
Class G planetoid with a Carbon Dioxide rich atmosphere, completely unremarkable possibly with the exception of its deep purple color.
Canterra II 
Class I gas super giant. As a gas giant, the planet effectively has its own small system with its 5 moons causing a small ring to appear around the planet from close ranges. The atmosphere is mainly comprised of Fluorine, Chlorine, and Argon which gives the planet a rich orange appearance. Starbase 99 orbited Canterra II before the base was destroyed by the Gorn in 2385.
Canterra III 
Class J Gas Giant, a remarkably ordinary gas giant with a stable orbit and a Nitrogen/Fluorine atmosphere also contains trace particles of Astatine and Radon. While the gas giant itself is unremarkable a number of its moons have provided additional mining opportunities although no fixed settlements have ever been established.
Cantarra IV 
Class L planetoid, the only planet in the system capable of supporting humanoid life. The Oxygen/Argon atmosphere means most humanoids can survive on the planet's surface for several days before experiencing any noticeable medical issues, as a result plans are being discussed to create a planet side base for equipment and supply storage. The planet is significantly larger than Earth at around 14,000km in diameter and whilst quite far from its stars their combined energy output results in a surface temperature between -30 and 15 degrees Celcius.
