Class Information

The Borg Cube derives its name from the geometric shape of the ship. With each side of the Cube measuring 3,000 meters the cube is the larges ship in use by the Borg Collective and the second largest ship ever encountered by Starfleet with only the V'ger ship surpassing it in size.A single Cube is capable of assimilating a planet without the assistance of another cube.

There are no structures on the exterior of a Cube that can be determined to serve as a means of propulsion. Even though there are no obvious propulsion systems a Cube is more than capable of keeping up with even the fastest of know ships. Cubes have been observed unstinting transwarp conduits to travel at speed grated that warp ten.

Typical interior of a Borg Cube

Like the Cubes propulsion systems there are no obvious weapons systems on a Cube even though a Cube has formidable offensive and defensive systems. The observed standard appears to be thirty different energy weapons and twelve projectile weapons. The exact placement of these weapons seems to very from Cube to Cube. The Cubes shielding systems like the shielding systems utilized by the Borg drones is adaptive in order to better protect the ship from enemy fire. Cubes have also been observed to regenerate damage resulting in minimizing damage from weapons that manage to make it past the Cubes shields.

Cube interiors are decentralized with no one section dedicated to any specific tasks such as the Bride, Engineering, Living quarters, Sickbay, or Science labs that are found on ships operated by any other fleet in the galaxy. Some Cubes have been observed to be equipped with docking bays for Spheres and a secondary docking bay for smaller ships captured by the Borg.

The first federation encounter with a Cube was in 2353 when the civilian researchers who made up the crew of the USS Raven tracked a Cube for three years studying the ship and the Borg crew. The Raven was destroyed and the crew assimilated in 2356 when an ion storm damaged the multi-adaptive shielding they were using to hide the Raven from Borg sensors.

The first official encounter between the Star Fleet vessel USS Enterprise D and a Cube took place in the J-25 system in 2365. This encounter was triggered by the entity know as Q who sent the Enterprise to that system in order to test the crew of the Enterprise and by extension the hole of Starfleet to see if they were ready to confront such a group as the Borg.

Several Starfleet ships attacking the Cube during the Battle of Sector 001

In 2367 the Borg made the first of two incursions into Federation space resulting in the Battle of Wolf 359. In this battle a fleet of forty ships attacked the Cube in the Wolf 359 system eight light years from the Sol System. While the cube was eventually destroyed thirty-nine of the Starfleet ships were damaged in the battle and the Enterprise D was severally damaged before destroying the cube in orbit of Earth. There was another incursion into Federation Space by a second Cube in 2373. While the Starfleet fared better in what would come to be called the Battle of Sector 001 Dozens of ships were either damaged or destroyed stopping this second cube.It was during the second incursion that Starfleet observed a Borg Sphere emerging from the Cube just prior to the Cubes destruction.
