2247 (refit in 2272)
In 2272 the first of the original Akula-class ships began a complete refit, similar to it's larger cousins' the Consitution and Miranda-classes had earlier in the decade. Of the 27 in service, 25 were refit. One, the USS Akula, was decommissioned and added to the Starfleet Museum and the other was mothballed. The Akula-class went on to serve Starfleet well though some trying times in the late 2200s.
The Akula-class is one of the lesser know classes from Starfleet's history, even though she was built in larger numbers then the more well known Constitution-class. The Akula was small, heavily armed, agile, fast, and easy to construct. The Akula used the same nacelles and saucer design as the Constitution and Miranda-classes, but scaled down to about 3/4 of the size. The major differences are the visible lack of an engineering hull and repositioned nacelles. The Akula-class ships were designed for countering Klingon B'rel Class birds of prey, escort duty, and border patrols. By doing these missions, it freed the Miranda and Constitution-classes for more exploration missions, something the Akula wasn't well suited for.
In 2287, a boarder skirmish erupted between the Federation and Klingons. A Federation convoy strayed off course and crossed the neutral zone into Klingon space. It was quickly attacked by three Klingon ships, two B'rel class birds of prey and one K'T'Inga class battlecruiser. Two Akula-class ships patrolling the boarder responded to distress calls. The starships South Carolina and St. Lo attempted to cover the freighters retreat, but the Klingons soon turned their attention to them. The USS St. Lo covered the freighters while the USS South Carolina attacked the first of the two B'rels and quickly destroyed it, thanks to it's superior firepower. By this time, the St. Lo was fighting with the other B'rel as the K't'inga made an attack on the convoy. The South Carolina engaged the larger battlecruiser. Using it's agility, the smaller Akula was able to damage the Klingon ship's warp engines while taking relatively moderate damage. After the St. Lo dispatched the remaining B'rel, the two Federation ships fell back across the boarder with the remaining 4 ships of the 7 ship convoy.
Overall a successful smaller starship for Starfleet, the Akula remained in production until about the 2320s where it was ceased. Today the vast majority of the Akula Class vessels have been retired from service.
