== Class Overview ==
The '''USS ''Triton'' (NCC-80106)''' is a [[Luna Class|''Luna''-class]] [[Federation]] [[ma:Starship|starship]] operating in the [[ma:24th century|24th Century]] and is the third starship to bear the name. The ship is known for being one of a few ships in Starfleet to host a crew that has a wide range of species serving on it, including those that aren't humanoid based. The ''Triton'' currently serves in the [[Fourth Fleet|Fourth Fleet’s]] [[Task Force 17#Lead Expeditionary Force|Task Force 17's lead expeditionary group]]. Famed for her time under the command of several notable Starfleet captains, including Captain Evelynn Vangelos, Captain [[bfms_char:15176|James Preston McCallister]] and most recently Captain Rio Canção.
A workhorse through and through, the Reliant-class light cruiser is a modern successor to the venerable Miranda-class. She is designed to take on nearly any mission with success, though she does not excel in any one area. Instead, it is a highly-balanced class with an emphasis on reliability and efficiency.

=== Exploration and Science ===
==Design & Layout==
Though not designed to embark on long-range, independent exploration missions, Reliant is still a capable scientific platform for missions such as planetary surveys. Uniquely for a ship of her size, Reliant does not have any specialized labs–all six of her science labs are generalized and configurable to the particular mission she has been assigned to, rather than having dedicated spaces for each discipline. To save space, there is no stellar cartography bay, but there is an astrometrics suite that serves the same function.

Reliant has enhanced long-range sensors mounted in two pods between the superstructure and the primary hull, which give her above-average range and precision in terms of scanning ability, which makes her ideal to patrol the Federation’s borders.
===Physical arrangement===
The ''Triton'' shared many of its designs and styles based on a mixture from the [[Sovereign Class|''Sovereign-c''lass]] and [[Galaxy Class|''Galaxy''-class]] after its first major refit in 2385. Most of the aesthetic improvements were ordered by Captain McCallister who found ''Triton'''s original arrangements (the main colour scheme was grey and silver) to be bland and believed it would be detrimental to the crew if they had to work in such a dull looking workplace. The main colour scheme running through the ship from 2385 onwards was one of dark prussian blue and deep maroon.

=== Diplomacy ===
===Shipboard life===
Not well-suited to diplomatic missions above the level of simple two-party negotiations, Reliant is nevertheless equipped with several guest suites that can be configured to different environment types. More often than actually hosting negotiations herself, Reliant is tasked with delivering diplomats or senior Starfleet officers to conferences within Federation space.
''Triton'' ran on three duty shifts. Alpha shift started at 0700 hours and finished at 1500 hours. Beta shift started at 1500 hours and finished at 2300 hours. Gamma shift started at 2300 hours and finished at 0700 hours.

=== Engineering ===
All enlisted officers on board ''Triton'' were expected to share quarters with three others, while those with the rank of ensign and who weren't department heads would have to share with an officer of a similar position. The senior staff and those ranked from lieutenant junior grade had their own quarters. ''Triton'''s civilian population was small compared to ''Galaxy''-class ships. Most of the civilians that are on board are allowed to hold important jobs in the ship's science and medical departments, as well as support areas like the crew lounge and the ship's school or the Arboretum.
In many respects similar to the venerable Miranda-class line of starships from which she is based, the Reliant-class is a compact light cruiser built to undertake any of Starfleet’s primary missions, from exploration to humanitarian relief to border patrol. She was designed for Starfleet to be able to put a starship wherever it needed one with just the right balance between capability and minimal resource use when a larger or more specialized vessel would be overkill.

As with her predecessor, Reliant dispenses with a full secondary hull and instead has her engineering sections integrated into a superstructure attached directly to the ship’s saucer section. This gives the ship a sleek profile and minimizes construction costs. The primary hull contains most of the ship’s crew quarters, science labs, and command facilities, while the superstructure contains power generation systems, the ship’s twin shuttle bays, an extensive cargo management area, and the impulse engines.
Due to the nature of the ''Triton'' diverse crew, where only approximately fifteen percent are Human and the rest are from other Humanoid or non-Humanoid backgrounds, ''Triton'''s environmental controls as well as crew support facilities are designed to support such a variety of races. In 2386, Captain McCallister attempted to ensure that at least sixty percent of the crew represented at least one Federation member state. This remained the same after his departure.

An obvious visual difference between Reliant and Miranda is that Reliant is equipped with a medium-sized main deflector on the ventral side of her saucer section and a smaller secondary deflector under the ship’s main bridge. These two deflectors both extend the ship’s long-range sensor range and provide the necessary deflector power for the newer vessel’s much-improved top speed. Otherwise, the dimensions between the two classes are mainly unchanged, apart from a small increase in overall length and width, and a decrease in height due to the larger nacelles being positioned at a slightly wider angle from the main hull in Reliant than in Miranda.
===Holographic ship-wide systems===
Like most other Starfleet ships, Triton is equipped with integrated holographic projectors on every deck through every section to support the use of the ship's [[ma:Emergency Medical Hologram|Emergency Medical Holographic program]]. However the EMH is not the only holographic program installed on the ''Triton''. The ship is one of many ships in the fleet in being a test-bed for the new Emergency Repair Holographic Team (ERHT), which is designed to support the engineering staff during critical situations where holographic systems are operational in a dangerous zone that prevents a damage control team from entering without safety gear. The ERHT was activated before the ''Triton'' was launched from its refit and they had helped in re-installing a number of power relays and went on to aid in the completion of the last upgrades to the ship’s secondary computer processors. The ERHT was made up of four holographic crew-members. Due to the nature of using the holographic systems, the hologrid which managed and powered the holographic crew ran its energy off from an independent power system away from the ship's primary fusion generators. ''Triton'' was also equipped with an [[ma:Emergency Command Hologram|Emergency Command Hologram]] but to date has yet to be activated.

Reliant’s propulsion systems were designed to improve the overall cruising speed to a very respectable Warp 8, but limits her overall top speed to Warp 9.5, both to minimize the complexity of her engines and to extend their lifespan. Based on a scaled-down version of the same warp coils in use aboard the Sovereign-class, Reliant is theoretically capable of sustaining higher speeds with the addition of a larger power plant, but her mission profiles would rarely call for this sort of modification. In short, Reliant is designed to be dependably quick, but not to be any kind of great sprinter.
===Support Craft===
The ship was permanently outfitted with six shuttles and three runabouts in 2386. These crafts were named by the captain in honour of former officers and close friends he had served with and who he was forced to witness die in the line of duty. The captain's yacht itself is based on the same style of the ''Sovereign''-class' yacht and was a present from a former mentor he taught with at Starfleet Academy, Captain Rio Canção. McCallister had the yacht named ''Rivière Chanson'', which was the French translation for her name. Captain Canção joked with McCallister that the yacht appeared bigger on the inside compared to the outside. The yacht itself was outfitted with the latest technological developments made Starfleet Research & Development. One of the advanced technologies was an improved version of the [[ma:Unimatrix shielding|Unimatrix shielding system]] developed for the use on ''Delta''-Class runabouts ten years earlier.

==History==
===2380-2385===
The ''Triton'' was launched on January 2nd 2380 on [[ma:Stardate|stardate]] 57005.35 and was the last of the first batch of twelve Luna-class ships to be constructed. She was built at [[ma:Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards|Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards]] in the orbit of [[ma:Mars|Mars]]. Like her sister ships, the ''Triton'' would have a diverse crew with only twenty percent of her crew being human and the other eighty percent being crewmembers from all walks of life with different backgrounds. Captain Evelynn Vangelos took command of the ''Triton'' at the ship’s christening service. The ''Triton'' would be Vangelos’ last time in the [[ma:Command chair|captain’s chair]] before her decision to retire.

The ship’s impulse engines are similarly designed to prioritize an overall above-average performance with reduced maintenance and higher reliability, versus all-out extreme performance. This is a new model of impulse engine based on the original ship’s combination warp-impulse power plant, which is able to draw directly from the ship’s primary warp power conduits as needed. Compared to her mother class, Reliant has had her impulse engines relocated from the ship’s centerline to positions flanking the shuttle bays, in line with the warp nacelle pylons. This has the added benefit of being able to use impulse thrust to control the ship’s heading to a greater degree than was previously possible, which further increases Reliant’s efficiency.
After a six month shakedown cruise in Federation space, Vangelos would command the ''Triton'' on its first five years deep space mission in the [[Beta Quadrant]]. The exploration mission was a success and the ''Triton'' made contact with twenty one new races, catalogued and mapped just over three thousand light years of unexplored space. For Vangelos’ efforts on her final assignment she was highly decorated and awarded with a presidential award. Once the ''Triton'' returned to Federation space, Vangelos retired from [[Starfleet]] and the ship was sent to Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards for some repairs, a refit to its computer and propulsion systems as well as a resupply. The entire process would take between nine-twelve months; as such the entire ''Triton'' crew were re-assigned elsewhere in the fleet while the yard's engineers got on with the upgrades.

Small craft facilities aboard Reliant are oversized for a vessel of her size, with identical twin shuttle bays on the aft end of the ship’s superstructure flanking the ship’s centerline taking up a large portion of three decks. Between these shuttle bays is a large cargo hold, which makes Reliant suited to colony support and cargo transport missions. While only normally equipped with four shuttles and four workbees, Reliant could easily handle up to twenty shuttles, or a half-dozen runabouts on a short-term basis as mission needs dictate.
===2385-2387===
At the end of 2385 it was announced that Starfleet Command had selected a new commanding officer and that [ would be taking over the ship. McCallister, a young but experienced officer, supervised the last of the refits of the ''Triton''. McCallister was instrumental in shedding off some time of the estimated time of completion. The ''Triton'' was expected to re-launch with a brand new crew two months earlier than originally expected.

=== Tactical ===
''Triton'' was launched and ordered to take up lead of a small relief force heading to Starbase 378 to support efforts in the Alcor sector. The sector was preparing for the collapse of the Amorgia star which would have drastic changes to the local region. Before ''Triton'' arrived though they received news that the star collapsed and as such the gravity shift in the Alcor sector has had a profound effect on a number of Federation worlds. The task group that ''Triton'' had led was assigned various duties to provide relief efforts while the ''Triton'' herself was ordered to deal with a crisis that was brewing between the Federation colony of Alcor Prime and a race known as the Hayde’nk, who are a Federation Protectorate. Ships from the Hayde'nk Royal High Guard had been attacking Federation ships when they sought refuge in the Commonwealth after the collapse of Amorgia. The Federation Council and President wanted answers to know why this was happening and to stop any more attacks from happening again. The crew discovered that the Hayde'nk had a change in their government, one that was orchestrated by dissidents who were manipulating military and political leaders against each other. This rebel group were being supported by a Ferengi Daimon and his crew, who themselves were captured by their business partners and later killed. Working alongside some of these leaders of the Hayde'nk Commonwealth, the crew were able to help restore order to the Commonwealth after the underground movement was exposed. Peace returned to the Hayde'nk Commonwealth and answers were shared with the [[Ferengi Alliance]] about the rogue Ferengi crew that were helping the dissidents. During this mission the ''Triton'' herself was badly damaged and returned to Starbase 378 for extensive repairs and to finish off installing any systems that were not put in before her rushed launch. The ship remained moored at the station for a few weeks before being ordered to help the colony on Olbari II with evacuation.
Equipped with eleven small Type-XII phaser arrays, Reliant is provided with all-around beam weapon coverage, which is a major improvement over Miranda, which had several well-known blind-spots. Like with her engines, Reliant’s phaser arrays are an adapted version of the same arrays in use aboard Sovereign, which are a substantial improvement from earlier phaser arrays in terms of their precision and combat survivability, though with Reliant’s smaller power generation ability and thus lower firepower, they are expected to last at least twice as long as their larger cousins before needing major maintenance. Theoretically, it would be possible to achieve greater performance with these arrays with additional power.

Torpedo coverage is provided by a pod located above the main superstructure of the vessel, which contains two forward and two aft torpedo triple launcher arrays, which consist of three launch tubes each that share a common loading system. This arrangement gives Reliant the ability to fire volleys of three torpedos in rapid succession from each array, or to fire them in clusters of three at a time, with a longer reload period.
After entering the Olbari system, ''Triton'' was responsible for constructing emergency shelters on Olbari III to help in the evacuation of its sister planet on Olbari II. At the beginning of this mission the crew and ship were pushed to their limits to help the Olbari II colonists survive the climate changes that they were experiencing and to deal with leaving their homes behind them.  As the crew continued with their efforts to save the population they soon discovered a virus was spreading through the colonists. Racing against the clock, the medical staff worked hard to find the cure to save the population. With the colonists saved and set up in their new temporary homes, ''Triton'' remained in the system for several more weeks to ensure the colony’s new homes were safe and secure. By the end of the year the ship was ordered to head to Deep Space 10 to receive new orders.

In addition to ten centimeters of ablative armor on her hull, Reliant is equipped with the same multi-layer shielding system found on similar ships of her size and mission, with an estimated 120% greater survivability than modernized Miranda-class ships experienced during the Dominion War. Crew survivability is further increased by having 58 nine-person ASRV-type escape pods and EMH coverage throughout the entire ship.
The crew spent some well deserved R&R on the station and celebrated the New Year in while at DS-10. Starfleet finally sent the crew their next set of orders via Admiral Luke Duncan. Duncan had retired almost two years prior however was pulled out of retirement by Starfleet to lead a critical mission that only he had expertise and experience to carry out. He had been tasked to find Deep Space 19 and the Federation colony on Kovar which had gone missing the previous year. ''Triton'' would join with the [[USS Odyssey|USS ''Odyssey'']] on a joint-mission that was publicised as an exploration mission but was in fact this was a front for the mission to find out if the missing station and colony had in fact been moved by a powerful anomaly from the Beta Quadrant to somewhere on the fringes of the Federation borders. Both Starfleet ships left Deep Space 10 and raced to the border to reach the possible new location of Deep Space 19. Due to the possible political ramifications of the mission, the ''Triton'' was upgraded with some new systems, mostly tactical based. Though their mission was a success, a number of officers lost their lives during a brief conflict with some elements of the [[Cardassian Union]]. ''Triton'' docked at Deep Space 19 and received repairs while the crew helped with relief efforts on the colony.

Computer and navigation systems are provided by a computer core that runs from the floor of the main bridge to the top of the ventral sensor dome. This computer core is primarily isolinear, though it does have banks of bioneural processors that can be tasked with specific functions. For instance, this additional power could be devoted to the science labs during a stellar survey or to the holographic projectors when multiple EMH instances are needed for a casualty situation. Reliant is also built with space to install the dedicated sub-processors necessary to navigate the ship through slipstream, as well as space in the engineering areas to install the benamite matrix and other technology, but most Reliant-class starships will spend their entire careers without leaving Federation space.
Once ''Triton'' was fully repaired the ship began its explorative mission of the Beta Quadrant. In three months, the ship made first contact with four new warp capable species. On all occasions the crew left these races in the hopes of developing relations further with them. The ship had mapped eleven systems by the time they returned to port. During their return home the crew was able to avert a disaster with the Cardassians involving a pre-warp society. Alongside this, they were able to stop elements of the Romulan Tal Shiar from gaining their hands on an [[ma:Omega molecule|Omega molecule]]. This mission itself was classified however it did cause some tension between Captain McCallister and the rest of his senior staff as he was unable to share with them the information about omega and why Triton was involved in such a highly secretive mission.

=== Shipboard Life ===
By the end of 2387, the crew of the ''Triton'' discovered how the Iconian technology that had moved DS-19 and Kovar from the Beta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant worked. Assisting their colleagues on DS-19, they were able to return the space station and colony back to their original position in the Beta Quadrant. Sadly though, during the process the ''Triton'' was heavily damaged and the ''Odyssey'' was destroyed.
Due to modern automation, Reliant has approximately twenty fewer crewmembers than Miranda, but due to the shrinking of certain internal systems, she also has a far greater standard of living than that small difference in crew size might suggest, with two full holodecks, four smaller holosuites, and a full range of permanent recreational facilities. Accommodation standards are similar to the Intrepid-class, with no greater than double berths for even the most junior crewmembers. In a pinch, though, the ship’s life support systems could support a crew of up to 500, with the addition of bunk beds. The ship’s evacuation capacity is an impressive 750, though this would only be possible with the conversion of the shuttle bays and cargo holds into living areas.

Assignments to Reliant-class ships are seen as preferable to many of the other ships of her size, given her high standards of accommodation. Reliant captains and crews tend to be either relatively junior or people who have purposefully selected assignments that would keep them in or near Federation space.
===2387-2399===
While the ''Triton'' was taken to the Beta Antares Shipyards for major repairs, the entire crew was re-assigned elsewhere. Only twenty engineers were assigned to repair the ship, a job that would take another five years to complete which suffered from numerous delays. By 2392, ''Triton'' had completed its repairs and was re-launched. Assigned to assist with limited operations in the Gamma Quadrant, the ''Triton'' would go on to be one of a few Starfleet ships assigned to limited deep space exploration so far away from Federation territory. In 2398, the ship returned from the Gamma Quadrant in need of its next refit and was sent to the Devron Fleet Yards

Overall, the Reliant is designed to be a capable, dependable workhorse starship that can handle nearly any mission with relative crew comfort and without Starfleet needing to invest in a more powerful or more specialized asset, all while flying the familiar silhouette of Miranda, a starship which has become an iconic symbol of Starfleet.
===2399+===
The refit for the ''Triton'' took over a year, a majority of the work included computer enhancements. With Starfleet wanting to undertake further exploration missions, it was decided that the ship would be assigned as part of the Federation's efforts in exploring the Delta Quadrant. Eventually command was handed over to Captain Rio Canção, a former friend and mentor of Captain McCallister.

== Class History ==
==Crew==
By 2350, there were over 2,000 Miranda-class starships in service. These reliable light cruisers had been in mass production since the 2270s and had largely supplanted their Constitution-class cousins within the first two decades of their service due to being better armed, more efficiently shielded, and, generally speaking, a more sensible combination of facilities needed for Starfleet’s quotidian missions. For her form factor, there were few other true replacements available for much of the eighty years she was in wide service, though many other medium-sized ships were also developed then, including the Renaissance, Soyuz, and Centaur-types. While Constellation-class heavy cruisers were able to carve out a niche for themselves between the Miranda and Excelsior, Starfleet’s trend towards larger and larger ships had left a gap on the lower end of the spectrum long enough that its mainstay light cruiser had gone decades and decades without substantial upgrades.

A fleet modernization program with the Galaxy and Nebula-class explorers at its core was envisioned as early as the 2340s, along with an assortment of smaller ships that would replace the Miranda-class not writ large but with specific starships optimized for specialized roles. This started with the Cheyenne, Springfield, and Challenger classes being introduced as scouts, science vessels, and couriers respectively in the early 2350s, before the more advanced New Orleans-class light cruisers came into service in the early 2360s just ahead of their larger cousins. Slowly, as these new units came online, Miranda-class ships were retired and mothballed or transferred to colonial defense fleets until 90% of these vessels were out of service by 2365. The remaining units continued on as transports, couriers, and training vessels for most of the rest of that decade, being further sidelined by the Norway, Steamrunner, Saber, and Akira-classes which were beginning to enter service.
==Lineage==
The name '''''Triton''''' comes from Ancient Greek mythology. ''Triton'' is named after the Greek sea god Triton, the son of Poseidon (the Greek god comparable to the Roman Neptune). Triton is the name of the moon that orbits [[ma:Neptune|Neptune]] in the [[ma:Sol system|Sol system]].

With war with the Dominion looming, Starfleet began to realize that it had a problem: Miranda-class ships were not being replaced one-for-one. A New Orleans-class ship typically took four Mirandas out of service, for example. An Akira was “worth” six, based on overall mission capabilities. For large fleet engagements, numbers were as useful as sheer power, and so Starfleet began to quickly rearm and redeploy its Miranda fleet in stripped-down capacities, most of them without their science facilities reactivated, to bolster the fleet. This proved fortuitous as they became the most common screening ship during the largest battles of the Dominion War, suffering huge losses but allowing much larger ships like the Galaxy and Nebula to operate with minimal losses.
There have been many [[Earth]] naval ships named after Triton in both the [[ma:Royal Navy|British Royal Navy]] and the [[ma:United States Navy|United States Navy]].
===''Triton'' NV-21===
The first starship to be named ''Triton'', was an old [[ma:Earth Starfleet|Earth Starfleet]] ''Ganges''-class. The ''Triton'' served for many years in the early days of Humanity's quest to explore the stars. She was assigned to protect the shipping lines between Earth and Andoria. Sadly though she was destroyed and lost with all hands during the closing days of the Earth-Romulan War. The ''Triton'' was responsible for destroying twelve [[Romulan Star Empire|Romulan]] ships and served alongside Andorian forces in defending the [[ma:Andorian Empire|Andorian Empire]].
===USS ''Triton'' NCC-2147===
The second starship to be named ''Triton'', was an ''Excelsior''-class launched in 2294. The ship would go on to serve Starfleet and the Federation for over fifty years until she was decommissioned in 2347. The ship had been involved in many assignments from a number of deep space exploration assignments to being involved in several conflicts with hostile neighbours. These include the [[ma:Tomed Incident|Tomed Incident]] and the opening days of the [[ma:Federation-Cardassian War|Federation-Cardassian War]]. The ''Triton'' went through four captains and numerous refits.

At the end of the Dominion War, however, these ships were returned to the mothball yards as quickly as they could be replaced and by 2385 the last Miranda-class vessel was decommissioned for the final time. Starfleet continued to develop more and more vessel classes, all with their own specializations. Though briefly flirting with a mid-sized, highly-flexible design with the Rhode Island, these were never produced in large numbers and were limited by their small crew size. The Excelsior-class, once the flagship of the fleet, had slowly settled into its role as a workhorse, though fewer and fewer of them remained in service by the end of the 2380s and sending in a crew of 750 to most missions was simply overkill.
In 2373, in the build-up to the Dominion War, Starfleet re-activated the ''Triton'' and she received a major refit to bring her in line with the latest technologies to help in defending the Federation. She served throughout the entire war until she was sadly lost at the last battle, the [[ma:Battle of Cardassia|Battle of Cardassia]].

===USS ''Triton'' In Play===
Starfleet Command’s deployment algorithms favored matching specific ships to specific missions, but positioning them so that they could always be assigned to missions that they were optimized for was not always possible, leading to mismatches or long delays in missions being assigned and completed. The Diligent, for example, was designed to have exploratory capability and science labs far greater than the Defiant, but having it survey a star system took far longer than a dedicated surveyor–what was even more irritating for the admiralty was that these specialized ships often took longer even than Miranda-class ships did in their day to accomplish a task, when not assigned to their primary missions. To quote the commander of the Third Fleet in 2385, “I don’t need a medical frigate, I don’t need an escort, I don’t need a flight-deck cruiser! I just need a [redacted] starship!”
*Wanting to write for a non-humanoid character is no easy feat, but the opportunity to do it on a ship that is built for an infinite combination in diversity is certainly appealing. Players are encouraged to use their imagination and write for such fascinating creatures including the Aurelian, Horta, Edosians, Phylosian or Xindi.

{{DEFAULTSORT:Triton}}
Thus, the Reliant project was born. The brief was simple: a modern replacement for the Miranda-class that could handle missions within and near Federation space of short to moderate duration, with a minimum of fuss. The obvious starting point was the Miranda design itself. Due to the age of the hulls and the long-term effects of baryon radiation on their space frames, it was not possible to simply refit the fleet to modern standards, so a new design was needed. To expedite the design process, the ADSB was given strict orders not to reinvent the wheel: Starfleet Command wanted and needed a modern Miranda and that’s what they were going to get.

Design cues were taken from modern, successful starship designs. Still rare and powerful in the 2380s, the Sovereign-class ended up lending many of her systems to the humble Reliant, though scaled-down and lower-power. The Reliant didn’t have any peaks on its performance ratings–it was fast, but not too fast. It was well-armed but not a warship. It broke no records when it came to scientific or medical facilities, but was rated at being able to handle 80% of all mission profiles. She was the epitome of the “go anywhere, do anything” school of design. Due to using advanced but highly-tested components at a lower power level, Reliant was expected to be a good use of construction and maintenance resources.

A solid, stable design, the ADSB was also mindful in creating Reliant of the lessons of the Dominion War, in which her Miranda predecessor were pressed into service as warships. Space was purposefully left within the hull for a larger power plant to be installed if need be, which would raise the ship’s performance to the design potential of her components. In addition, she was made ready to be retrofitted with slipstream drive, should the need arise. Starfleet’s new fleet of reliable general-purpose vessels would be able to be quickly and effectively refit into powerful, compact warships or long-range explorers as future needs dictate.

More than thrilled with the new design, Starfleet gave a shocking initial order of 1,000 units, the largest single order of starships in the history of the Federation, assigning construction contracts to more than two dozen yards across the Federation, pending the completion of the prototype unit. They would begin to replace the hodge-podge of medium-sized ships produced in the 2340s and 2350s, raising overall fleet capabilities, while also smoothing out disparities between different fleet units.

Reliant herself began construction at the Beta Antares shipyards in 2387 and was launched in 2389. Large scale production began after her initial spaceworthiness trials.

== In Play ==

* Meant to be ubiquitous and highly useful, without being over-powered or ultra-modern, the Reliant-class would commonly be encountered in Federation space after 2389. She is the perfect NPC supply ship, transport, patrol vessel, etc. because of her well-roundedness.
* Reliant-class ships make a good starter ship, either for a junior command character or an inexperienced game master, because their niche is not really having a particular niche; they're okay at everything without being great at any one thing, which also means that they don't have any major weaknesses like certain more specialized classes might.
* Reliant-class ships also make good transports for Flag Officers, given that they're fast but don't use many resources. They would not be suited for an Admiral leading from the front--in that case, they'd want an <nowiki>''</nowiki>actual<nowiki>''</nowiki> flagship like an Odyssey or a Sovereign--but they're unobtrusive enough and well-defended enough to be an admiral's day-to-day transport within Federation space. They're also less-likely to critical missions like larger ships.
* Reliant-class crews are made up of officers fresh out of the academy and others with junior standing; this is the place you learn the ropes, not a prestige assignment.

"To do the useful thing, to say the courageous thing, to contemplate the beautiful thing: that is enough for one man's life"
    —T.S. Elliot - Ship's Dedication Quote

The USS Triton (NCC-80106) is a Luna-class Federation starship operating in the 24th Century and is the third starship to bear the name. The ship is known for being one of a few ships in Starfleet to host a crew that has a wide range of species serving on it, including those that aren't humanoid based. The Triton currently serves in the Fourth Fleet’s Task Force 17's lead expeditionary group. Famed for her time under the command of several notable Starfleet captains, including Captain Evelynn Vangelos, Captain James Preston McCallister and most recently Captain Rio Canção.

Design & Layout

Physical arrangement

The Triton shared many of its designs and styles based on a mixture from the Sovereign-class and Galaxy-class after its first major refit in 2385. Most of the aesthetic improvements were ordered by Captain McCallister who found Triton's original arrangements (the main colour scheme was grey and silver) to be bland and believed it would be detrimental to the crew if they had to work in such a dull looking workplace. The main colour scheme running through the ship from 2385 onwards was one of dark prussian blue and deep maroon.

Shipboard life

Triton ran on three duty shifts. Alpha shift started at 0700 hours and finished at 1500 hours. Beta shift started at 1500 hours and finished at 2300 hours. Gamma shift started at 2300 hours and finished at 0700 hours.

All enlisted officers on board Triton were expected to share quarters with three others, while those with the rank of ensign and who weren't department heads would have to share with an officer of a similar position. The senior staff and those ranked from lieutenant junior grade had their own quarters. Triton's civilian population was small compared to Galaxy-class ships. Most of the civilians that are on board are allowed to hold important jobs in the ship's science and medical departments, as well as support areas like the crew lounge and the ship's school or the Arboretum.

Due to the nature of the Triton diverse crew, where only approximately fifteen percent are Human and the rest are from other Humanoid or non-Humanoid backgrounds, Triton's environmental controls as well as crew support facilities are designed to support such a variety of races. In 2386, Captain McCallister attempted to ensure that at least sixty percent of the crew represented at least one Federation member state. This remained the same after his departure.

Holographic ship-wide systems

Like most other Starfleet ships, Triton is equipped with integrated holographic projectors on every deck through every section to support the use of the ship's Emergency Medical Holographic program. However the EMH is not the only holographic program installed on the Triton. The ship is one of many ships in the fleet in being a test-bed for the new Emergency Repair Holographic Team (ERHT), which is designed to support the engineering staff during critical situations where holographic systems are operational in a dangerous zone that prevents a damage control team from entering without safety gear. The ERHT was activated before the Triton was launched from its refit and they had helped in re-installing a number of power relays and went on to aid in the completion of the last upgrades to the ship’s secondary computer processors. The ERHT was made up of four holographic crew-members. Due to the nature of using the holographic systems, the hologrid which managed and powered the holographic crew ran its energy off from an independent power system away from the ship's primary fusion generators. Triton was also equipped with an Emergency Command Hologram but to date has yet to be activated.

Support Craft

The ship was permanently outfitted with six shuttles and three runabouts in 2386. These crafts were named by the captain in honour of former officers and close friends he had served with and who he was forced to witness die in the line of duty. The captain's yacht itself is based on the same style of the Sovereign-class' yacht and was a present from a former mentor he taught with at Starfleet Academy, Captain Rio Canção. McCallister had the yacht named Rivière Chanson, which was the French translation for her name. Captain Canção joked with McCallister that the yacht appeared bigger on the inside compared to the outside. The yacht itself was outfitted with the latest technological developments made Starfleet Research & Development. One of the advanced technologies was an improved version of the Unimatrix shielding system developed for the use on Delta-Class runabouts ten years earlier.

History

2380-2385

The Triton was launched on January 2nd 2380 on stardate 57005.35 and was the last of the first batch of twelve Luna-class ships to be constructed. She was built at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in the orbit of Mars. Like her sister ships, the Triton would have a diverse crew with only twenty percent of her crew being human and the other eighty percent being crewmembers from all walks of life with different backgrounds. Captain Evelynn Vangelos took command of the Triton at the ship’s christening service. The Triton would be Vangelos’ last time in the captain’s chair before her decision to retire.

After a six month shakedown cruise in Federation space, Vangelos would command the Triton on its first five years deep space mission in the Beta Quadrant. The exploration mission was a success and the Triton made contact with twenty one new races, catalogued and mapped just over three thousand light years of unexplored space. For Vangelos’ efforts on her final assignment she was highly decorated and awarded with a presidential award. Once the Triton returned to Federation space, Vangelos retired from Starfleet and the ship was sent to Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards for some repairs, a refit to its computer and propulsion systems as well as a resupply. The entire process would take between nine-twelve months; as such the entire Triton crew were re-assigned elsewhere in the fleet while the yard's engineers got on with the upgrades.

2385-2387

At the end of 2385 it was announced that Starfleet Command had selected a new commanding officer and that [ would be taking over the ship. McCallister, a young but experienced officer, supervised the last of the refits of the Triton. McCallister was instrumental in shedding off some time of the estimated time of completion. The Triton was expected to re-launch with a brand new crew two months earlier than originally expected.

Triton was launched and ordered to take up lead of a small relief force heading to Starbase 378 to support efforts in the Alcor sector. The sector was preparing for the collapse of the Amorgia star which would have drastic changes to the local region. Before Triton arrived though they received news that the star collapsed and as such the gravity shift in the Alcor sector has had a profound effect on a number of Federation worlds. The task group that Triton had led was assigned various duties to provide relief efforts while the Triton herself was ordered to deal with a crisis that was brewing between the Federation colony of Alcor Prime and a race known as the Hayde’nk, who are a Federation Protectorate. Peace returned to the Hayde'nk Commonwealth and answers were shared with the Ferengi Alliance about the rogue Ferengi crew that were helping the dissidents. During this mission the Triton herself was badly damaged and returned to Starbase 378 for extensive repairs and to finish off installing any systems that were not put in before her rushed launch. The ship remained moored at the station for a few weeks before being ordered to help the colony on Olbari II with evacuation.

After entering the Olbari system, Triton was responsible for constructing emergency shelters on Olbari III to help in the evacuation of its sister planet on Olbari II. With the colonists saved and set up in their new temporary homes, Triton remained in the system for several more weeks to ensure the colony’s new homes were safe and secure. By the end of the year the ship was ordered to head to Deep Space 10 to receive new orders.

Triton would join with the USS Odyssey on a joint-mission that was publicised as an exploration mission but was in fact this was a front for the mission to find out if the missing station and colony had in fact been moved by a powerful anomaly from the Beta Quadrant to somewhere on the fringes of the Federation borders. Both Starfleet ships left Deep Space 10 and raced to the border to reach the possible new location of Deep Space 19. Due to the possible political ramifications of the mission, the Triton was upgraded with some new systems, mostly tactical based. Though their mission was a success, a number of officers lost their lives during a brief conflict with some elements of the Cardassian Union. Triton docked at Deep Space 19 and received repairs while the crew helped with relief efforts on the colony.

Once Triton was fully repaired the ship began its explorative mission of the Beta Quadrant. Alongside this, they were able to stop elements of the Romulan Tal Shiar from gaining their hands on an Omega molecule. This mission itself was classified however it did cause some tension between Captain McCallister and the rest of his senior staff as he was unable to share with them the information about omega and why Triton was involved in such a highly secretive mission.

By the end of 2387, the crew of the Triton discovered how the Iconian technology that had moved DS-19 and Kovar from the Beta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant worked. Assisting their colleagues on DS-19, they were able to return the space station and colony back to their original position in the Beta Quadrant. Sadly though, during the process the Triton was heavily damaged and the Odyssey was destroyed.

2387-2399

While the Triton was taken to the Beta Antares Shipyards for major repairs, the entire crew was re-assigned elsewhere. Only twenty engineers were assigned to repair the ship, a job that would take another five years to complete which suffered from numerous delays. By 2392, Triton had completed its repairs and was re-launched. Assigned to assist with limited operations in the Gamma Quadrant, the Triton would go on to be one of a few Starfleet ships assigned to limited deep space exploration so far away from Federation territory. In 2398, the ship returned from the Gamma Quadrant in need of its next refit and was sent to the Devron Fleet Yards

2399+

The refit for the Triton took over a year, a majority of the work included computer enhancements. With Starfleet wanting to undertake further exploration missions, it was decided that the ship would be assigned as part of the Federation's efforts in exploring the Delta Quadrant. Eventually command was handed over to Captain Rio Canção, a former friend and mentor of Captain McCallister.

Lineage

The name Triton comes from Ancient Greek mythology. Triton is named after the Greek sea god Triton, the son of Poseidon (the Greek god comparable to the Roman Neptune). Triton is the name of the moon that orbits Neptune in the Sol system.

There have been many Earth naval ships named after Triton in both the British Royal Navy and the United States Navy.

Triton NV-21

The first starship to be named Triton, was an old Earth Starfleet Ganges-class. The Triton served for many years in the early days of Humanity's quest to explore the stars. She was assigned to protect the shipping lines between Earth and Andoria. Sadly though she was destroyed and lost with all hands during the closing days of the Earth-Romulan War. The Triton was responsible for destroying twelve Romulan ships and served alongside Andorian forces in defending the Andorian Empire.

USS Triton NCC-2147

The second starship to be named Triton, was an Excelsior-class launched in 2294. The ship would go on to serve Starfleet and the Federation for over fifty years until she was decommissioned in 2347. The ship had been involved in many assignments from a number of deep space exploration assignments to being involved in several conflicts with hostile neighbours. These include the Tomed Incident and the opening days of the Federation-Cardassian War. The Triton went through four captains and numerous refits.

In 2373, in the build-up to the Dominion War, Starfleet re-activated the Triton and she received a major refit to bring her in line with the latest technologies to help in defending the Federation. She served throughout the entire war until she was sadly lost at the last battle, the Battle of Cardassia.

USS Triton In Play

  • Wanting to write for a non-humanoid character is no easy feat, but the opportunity to do it on a ship that is built for an infinite combination in diversity is certainly appealing. Players are encouraged to use their imagination and write for such fascinating creatures including the Aurelian, Horta, Edosians, Phylosian or Xindi.
