Nathan Samuels MP is the 4th and current Prime Minister of the United Earth Commonwealth. As the head of government for Earth and its colonies, he is responsible for the day-to-day operations. Born and raised in Florida, United States, he is also the Member of Parliament for the South-Eastern Seaboard, USA. He is also the co-deputy leader of the Federalist Democratic Party. Samuels, who was Florida's State Attorney, was successfully elected to the Earth Parliament in 2150, shortly after the USA signed the Traité d'Unification and became a fully-fledged member of the United Earth Government. Over the next three years, he became a rising star within his political party and in the House of Representatives. With general elections coming up in 2154, Samuels put his name forward to become the co-deputy leader of the Federalist Democratic Party in 2153 and won. He went on to win a majority in the lower chambers of parliament and was made the new Prime Minister. Along with the newly elected President and Vice President, they pushed forward an agenda that would see the mistakes of the previous administrations in how they dealt with the Xindi crisis, relations with the Vulcans and others fixed. Samuels was the architect for the Coalition of Planets, however, he had to manage with ghosts in his past during the early days of these talks to form a new alliance. In his younger years he belonged to Terra Prime, a xenophobic group who were eager to remove all alien life from Earth. After Terra Prime was dealt with, Samuels would attempt to work on developing stronger ties with other species for the benefit of humanity.
Biography
Early Life
When he was younger, Samuels's father had died in a freighter accident and he went on to blame the pilot, who happened to be Denobulan. Through his grief, Samuels joined the Terra Prime group but later on left, feeling he had made a stupid mistake. Over the rest of his adulthood, he did his best to distance himself from his rash choice.
Political Life
Prime Minister of the United Earth Commonwealth
After successfully saving the first summit regarding the Coalition of the Planets (once the Terra Prime incident had been averted) with help from Captain Jonathan Archer, Samuels' work and effort on the Coalition continued for the rest of 2155. Pushing for Earth's deep space program to be at the top of his administration's agenda, alongside a number of economic and social reforms in light of the Terra Prime incident, Samuels was very much in favour of Starfleet completing the construction of its NX-class explorers as such he granted the need for more resources to be allocated to Starfleet to complete the task. As a result of this, he was able to have Earth's first three warp-five capable ships lead diplomatic missions to other states to encourage them to reconsider their positions on joining the Coalition. Alongside their Vulcan, Andorian and Tellarite allies, the three ships weren't completely successful, nevertheless, Samuels was content in having only four states agree to the alliance. On March 3rd 2155, he became one of the signatories of the Coalition Compact, along with President Littlejohn for Earth. One of the first things he was quick to agree to, after seeing it as a political win for Earth, was an invitation from the newly elected Andorian Chancellor which invited the starship Challenger to visit Andoria.
Prime Minister Samuels was one of the first members of the executive to be briefed about the Andorian colony of Docana being invaded by a joint Malurian and Nausicaan task force. Before President Littlejohn could arrive, he assembled a majority of the cabinet in Paris to discuss the situation. He ordered for the Commonwealth military to be placed on high alert, wanting to make sure that the Commonwealth was secure in case it was attacked too. As the situation became a military one, as Commander-in-Chief, President Littlejohn became more involved in the matter and had Samuels brief her on everything they knew. Even though he could not understand why Chancellor Margerit insisted on allowing Captain Lloyd Burton to take command of the joint task force that was now assembled to retake Docana, he did eventually see that it had improved relations between Earth and Andoria. After the colony was liberated he made it quite clear to the rest of the cabinet that he could see Earth moving towards war with the Romulan Star Empire.
Samuels' prediction turned out to be true and when war was declared against the Romulan Star Empire by the Coalition of Planets, he felt that it was important that Earth's domestic affairs were kept on top of. Approaching President Littlejohn with the idea that his priorities should be more domestic, Littlejohn had said she was worried that their political rivals may see it that he was not running the government as effectively as he should. They could not deal with anyone losing confidence in the government in the House of Representatives. He disagreed, telling her that he would continue to work on foreign matters such as the development of the coalition but he feared that if they took their finger off the pulse of domestic issues then public support for the war would end. A somewhat agreement was made between the two leaders that also included Vice President Elisabeth Reynolds. The simple idea was that between the three of them they would attempt to balance the running of the commonwealth between them to ensure that all areas were covered. It resulted in the President and Prime Minister's weekly meetings taking place three times a week, they included the Vice President too as well as other members of the executive cabinet depending on the nature of the meeting. By the end of 2155, Samuels had visited the Orpheus Mining Colony on Luna to celebrate its re-opening. When the Romulans launched an attack against the Sol system, he was quickly taken to a safe and secure place under New Berlin.
