The USS Europa is a Luna-class light explorer currently assigned to a long-duration exploratory mission in the Gamma Quadrant.

Ship's History

First launched in 2380 under the command of Captain Uzoma Ekwueme, this vessel was given a five-year exploratory assignment in the Gamma Quadrant. During his five-year mission, Ekwueme oversaw eleven first-contact missions, nineteen second-contact missions, and the negotiation of multiple trade relationships with independent Gamma Quadrant powers. The Europa's return to earth was mere days after the disastrous synth-orchestrated terrorist attack on Mars, which resulted in the destruction of Utopia Planitia. While Ekwueme had hoped to be sent back out on another long-distance mission, the Europa was instead assigned to diplomatic and patrol duties on the Federation's borders, as Starfleet began to withdraw from the wider galaxy in response to the attack.

Following the destruction of Romulus in 2387, Ekwueme did persuade Starfleet Command to send him and his ship on a five-year mission in the Beta Quadrant, nominally to contact species past Romulan space, but more importantly to gather intelligence on the far reaches of the Star Empire while it was chaotic and vulnerable. While the ship had a few minor run-ins with Romulan commanders, Ekwueme was credited with an additional seven first contacts during this mission, as well as laying the groundwork for future exploratory missions.

In the 2390s, the Europa conducted numerous limited-duration exploratory missions just outside of the Federation's borders as Starfleet Command became more and more cautious about extending its reach too far. With Ekwueme promoted to Commodore in 2399, he assigned Captain Gregory Alein to replace him, before sending the ship on an exploratory mission into the Alpha Quadrant.

In 2366 negotiations were held between the Federation, the Caldonians, the Chrysalians, and the Ferengi with the Barzans aboard the starship ''Enterprise'' for rights to use the wormhole. These negotiations were mooted when it was discovered that only the wormhole's Alpha Quadrant end was fixed, while the other end moved between various points in the galaxy. This led to a Ferengi vessel carrying Arridor and Kol being trapped in the Delta Quadrant.

-This experiment used a combination of anti-graviton fields to "hollow out" a subspace "slot" that the wormhole would naturally be attracted to with a verteron field that helped establish a connection and it proved to be successful. Throughout the 2390s this wormhole was used to reinforce Starfleet in the Gradin Belt, which had been cut off from supplies since 2388, until it had stabilized to the point that the task force was able to expand through its other aperture near the Nacene Reach. Until 2395 when relay stations were established at both apertures, a science vessel had to maintain station near the wormhole to continue to stabilize it, but this is now provided by a fixed verteron array at both apertures to complement one built over Barzan II.

Still commercially minded, the Barzan government sought the establishment of a trading post both accessible by the nearby Ferengi Alliance and possessing effective dispute resolution mechanisms. The Federation was approached, and it was proposed that the first of the newly designed Guardian-class stations could be constructed. [[Starbase 38]] aka Guardian Station was completed in 2399, serving the dual purposes of facilitating trade and maintaining a permanent Starfleet presence at the mouth of the Barzan wormhole.
