The Deptrock system lies in the Breen Confederacy, close to the border with the Federation in the Deneb Sector. It is home to one of the region’s most productive dilithium mines, which is extracted almost entirely by the slave labourers kept in nearby camps. Mining and military operations at Deptrock saw a massive uptick when the Breen launched their offensive against the Federation in 2401 with the return of the Lost Fleet.

Dilithium Facilities

The dilithium mines of Deptrock are found on the system’s sixth planet, a rocky M-class world. Starfleet is not aware of any native sapient life on Deptrock VI, and its conditions are harsh for most humanoid lifeforms. Surface temperatures around the mines are boiling high during the day and freezingly cold at night, making survival outside of the Breen facilities or without equipment difficult.

The mines themselves are a sub-surface operation, with tunnels sunk into the rocks. Extracted dilithium is stored in vast containment pods near landing facilities; haulage vessels arrive roughly every week to land, load up on dilithium, and ship it out. Nearby are the camps housing the slave workers, who are wholly reliant on the Breen for essentials including food and water, as otherwise survival in this region of Deptrock VI would be impossible. This adds an additional element of security - if slaves escape, there is nowhere for them to go.

Defences

The Deptrock system has relied largely on secrecy and the security of the Breen border to stay safe. Only investigations by Starfleet Intelligence have alerted the Federation to the existence of the dilithium facility and what little is known of its infrastructure and nature. As such, Deptrock itself has only limited protection. Orbital defences and any permanent starship guard are small in number and power, but regional patrols are known to monitor the system and may provide emergency reinforcements. The exception is when haulage vessels come to ship out the dilithium, as these convoys usually have a significant escort.

Security on the surface focuses on maintaining control of the slaves. Guards monitor the camp, mines, and surface facilities, but it is the landing facilities that are the most heavily protected. Any escaping slaves would be condemned to death if they ran for the wilds of Deptrock, so landed vessels are kept under studious watch.

The surface facilities of the mine and slave camps includes the power generator and control systems for a limited orbital shield, which provides little defence against potential bombardment but prevents the use of transporter technology that could target staff, guards, slaves, or the dilithium reserves.
